Association of breast cancer with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in Northeast Brazil: molecular evidence

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of human papillomavirus DNA and genotypes in breast cancer and normal breast tissue samples obtained from women from the northeast region of Brazil.METHOD:One hundred three breast cancer samples and 95 normal breast samples, as the non-malignant controls, were studied. DNA extraction was verified by human beta-globin gene amplification, and polymerase chain reaction was conducted based on HPV L1-specific consensus primers MY09/MY11 and GP5+/GP6+, f… Show more

“…There is a range of discrepancies in the literature concerning the HPV prevalence in breast cancer patients. In line with our data, investigations involving cases and controls indicate a higher frequency of HPV in tumor tissues (37)(38)(39)(40)(41), while there are some studies that reported contradictory data (42,43). The distribution of the HPV genotype in this research indicated that all detected types belonged to high-risk HPV.…”

“…While a solid link between HPV and HNC (including anogenital cancers) has been made, a link between HPV and some cases of breast cancers is still debatable/controversial. As mentioned earlier, HPV16 has been detected in the breast milk from a mother and in oral samples from her spouse [38,40]; furthermore, an increasing number of studies have also detected HPV DNA and the expression of E7 protein in breast cancer samples in Europe [102,103], North America [104], Central/South America [105,106], and Asia/Oceania [107,108,109]. Thus, there is increasing data and it is likely that HPV may be associated with some types of breast cancers.…”

“…For the rst time in 1992 Di Lonardo A and colleagues suggested that HPV could play a crucial role in the genesis of breast carcinoma by detecting HPV16 DNA sequence in 29.4% of breast and lymph node samples (28). Following the rst publication, several more studies have documented the presence of HPV in malignant breast tumors (29)(30)(31). On the contrary negative relationship between HPV and breast cancer has been declared by few studies (32)(33)(34).…”
