Association of ACE2 Polymorphisms and Derived Haplotypes With Obesity and Hyperlipidemia in Female Spanish Adolescents

Abstract: BackgroundIn the cardiovascular (CV) system, overactivation of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) may trigger deleterious responses derived from angiotensin (Ang)-II, which can be attenuated by stimulation of ACE2 and subsequent Ang-(1-7) metabolite. However, ACE2 exhibits a high degree of genetic polymorphism that may affect its structure and stability, interfering with these cardioprotective actions. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship of ACE2 polymorphisms with cardiovascular risk fac… Show more

“…A study on the interaction of genes from the renin-angiotensin system with type 2 diabetes showed that a combination of multisite genetic variants, including ACE2 rs2106809, was associated with a higher risk, further supporting the link between ACE2 and diabetes 32 . In addition, a study from Spain showed that ACE2 polymorphisms were associated with obesity and hyperlipidemia in female adolescents, suggesting that the ACE2 SNP rs2074192 may confer susceptibility to obesity and hyperlipidemia in women 33 . Another study found that ACE2 rs2106809 variants may lead to lower HDL-C levels 34 .…”

“…Nowadays, a wide variety of ACE2 polymorphisms, including single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are closely related to metabolic diseases. It has been reported that four ACE2 SNPs (rs879922, rs233575, rs2158083 and rs2074192) and the haplotype (C-G-C) of the three formers were associated with a higher risk of overweight, obesity and hyperlipidemia in female Spanish adolescents [ 13 ]. In addition, a strong association was observed between the ACE2-rs4240157T > C genotypes and triglycerides, HDL-C, total cholesterol, and C-reactive protein in Tabuk [ 14 ].…”
