Un Abrazo Para La Familia: An Evidenced-Based Rehabilitation Approach in Providing Cancer Education to Low-SES Hispanic Co-Survivors

We discuss Un Abrazo Para La Familia as an effective, rehabilitation-informed evidence-based model of education, information-sharing, and skill-teaching for use with low-income Hispanic co-survivors of cancer. Over two years, 120 co-survivors participated in the intervention. The majority of participants (96%) were women and all but one reported being Hispanic. Both in Years 1 and 2, we followed the same pre- and post-intervention evaluation design. Based on pre- and post-intervention assessments of cancer-related knowledge and self-efficacy, the percentage of questions answered correctly about cancer significantly increased for co-survivors. Self-efficacy significantly increased as well. Using item analysis, we explored skill teaching as a mechanism for the effective delivery of Un Abrazo and recommend the use of promotoras in providing the intervention. Of the 12 cancer knowledge items resulting in statistically significant increases of cancer knowledge, 5 were taught via interactive skill-teaching. Given the projected rise in the incidence of cancer in Hispanic populations, coupled with the fact that people from low-income backgrounds face unique challenges in cancer prevention and management, implications of the Un Abrazo model for future research and policy regarding cancer and families are considered.

Those involved in circumstances in which children are raised by their grandparents often encounter serious problems that require assistance from counselors. Research suggests that grandparents and parents in these families typically experience heightened stress and psychosocial distress. Additionally, the children often encounter behavioral, emotional, and academic difficulties. These difficulties usually occur partly as a result of the factors that lead to grandparents having to assume responsibility for the children. This paper provides a report of the phenomenon, particularly as it relates to the various members' psychosocial well-being. In addition, family and group counseling are advanced as valuable relational psychotherapeutic models to enhance the well-being of the children, grandparents and parents involved.

Öz: Bu çalışmanın amacı, yüksek lisans öğrencilerinin bir grup lideri olarak kendilerine ilişkin değerlendirmelerini incelemektir. Çalışmaya 2015-2016 Eğitim Öğretim Yılında Muğla Sıtkı Koçman Üniversitesi Psikolojik Danışma ve Rehberlik Yüksek Lisans Programı'nda bir ders kapsamında grup psiko-eğitimi gerçekleştiren yedi grup lideri katılmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri yarı yapılandırılmış bir görüşme olan repertuar ağı tekniği ile toplanmıştır. Repertuar ağı ile verilerin toplanabilmesi için öncelikle değerlendirme nesneleri (elementler) araştırmacılar tarafından belirlenmiş ve elementlerin karşılaştırılması yoluyla elementler arasındaki farklılıklar ve benzerlikler ortaya çıkartılmıştır. Son aşamada her bir katılımcının Repertuar ağı yapısı incelenmiş ve elementler arasındaki öklid uzaklığı hesaplanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, ilk olarak grup liderliği konusunda üç katılımcının öz değerinin yüksek, üç katılımcının öz değerinin orta düzeyde olduğu ve birinin de düşük olduğu belirlenmiştir. İkinci olarak süpervizörüme göre bir lider olarak ben elementi ile bir grup lideri olarak ben elementine beş katılımcı yakın konumlandırırken iki katılımcı kısmen yakın olarak konumlandırmıştır. Danışanlarıma göre bir lider olarak ben elementlerini bir grup lideri ben elementine de altı katılımcı yakın konumlandırmış, bir katılımcı ise kısmen yakın konumlandırmıştır. Üçüncü olarak katılımcıların altısının gerek mesleğe başladıkları zamana, gerekse derse başladıkları zamana göre mesleki açıdan gelişim kaydettikleri belirlenmiştir. Bir katılımcı da daha az gelişme kaydettiğini bildirmiştir. Son olarak da katılımcıların "bir grup lideri olarak ben" elementinin, ideal grup lideri, ideal olmayan grup lideri, tanıdığım iyi bir grup lideri ve tanıdığım kötü bir grup lideri elementlerine olan uzaklıkları incelenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular literatür çerçevesinde yorumlanmış ve tartışılmıştır. The study group of the current research is composed of seven group leaders who conducted group psycho-education practices within the context of a course at Psychological Counseling and Guidance Graduate Program in Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University in 2015-2016 academic year. The data of the current study were collected by means of the repertory grid technique, one of the semi-structured interview techniques. In order to collect data through the repertory grid technique, first, the objects (elements) to be evaluated were determined by the researchers and similarities and differences between the elements were elicited through comparison.
