Association Between Sleep Quality, Mood Status, and Ocular Surface Characteristics in Patients With Dry Eye Disease

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate sleep and mood status in patients with dry eye disease (DED) and analyze the association between sleep quality, mood status, and ocular surface characteristics. Methods: Consecutive patients with DED (N = 106) and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (N = 50) were enrolled. Tear fluid break up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining, and Schirmer I tests were performed in the order listed here to evaluate dry eye. A visual analog… Show more

“…Masahiko et al 29 reviewed 7 articles and concluded that dry eye patients suffer more from bad quality sleep. Wu et al 30 also found that poor sleep quality may aggravate DED by affecting tear secretion and tear lm stability, even indirectly aggravate depression at the same time. The result from the M-SDS questionnaire showed the difference in frequent crying, sleep disturbance and depressed appetite between MGD patients and control.…”

“…Because the persistent DED may cause damage in the ocular surface including the cornea [12], it is reasonable for the correlation between the two diseases in the current study. In addition, the preservatives in anti-glaucomatous medications may cause further damage of ocular surface and lead to inflammation of the ocular surface and DED [28]. Thus an association between glaucoma and DED is expectable.…”

“…[62][63][64][65][66][67][68] Insomnia can disrupt the lacrimal system and cause DED, through increased tear osmolarity, decreased tear secretion and shortened tear film breakup time. 69,70 As a result, patients often complain about eye fatigue, presumably due to photophobia and blurred vision induced by tear film instability.…”
