Association between sleep duration and cardiac structure in youths at risk for metabolic syndrome

Abstract: The evidence for a link between sleep duration and cardiovascular risk is accumulating in youths, but no study has yet investigated the relationship between sleep duration and change of cardiac structure. In this study, we recruited 559 youths aged 14–28 years from the cohort of Beijing Child and Adolescent Metabolic Syndrome Study. Questionnaire, color Doppler echocardiography, oral glucose tolerance test and blood biomarkers analyses were performed. We found that sleep duration was negatively correlated with… Show more

“…The BCAMS is a longitudinal cohort study of cardiovascular risk factors beginning in childhood. The study protocol has been reported in detail elsewhere18–21 and is registered online (www.clinicaltrails.gov). Briefly, in 2004, a population-based survey was conducted in the Beijing area with a representative sample of children and adolescents (n=19 593, 50% boys).…”

“…Given that little is known about the evolution of these conditions in young populations and the likely existence of metabolic subphenotypes within pre-diabetes, with differing abilities to be detected and to portend cardiovascular disease, the aims of the present study were to (1) examine the efficacy of IFG as a screening strategy for identifying IGT in adolescents and young adults, (2) investigate the characteristics of insulin sensitivity and pancreatic beta-cell function in youth with isolated IFG versus IGT, (3) compare adipokine and cardiometabolic risk profiles between those with isolated IFG and IGT, and (4) compile these data to inform a strategy for screening at-risk youth for pre-diabetes based on data from the Beijing Child and Adolescent Metabolic Syndrome (BCAMS) study 18–20…”

“…Sufficient sleep facilitates optimal human metabolism and plays an important role in maintaining the normal functioning of the body and brain. Sleep restores damaged cells and muscles, relieves tiredness and fatigue, and facilitates well-being and a healthy life [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. In contrast, if sleep duration and quality is insufficient, this may cause and exacerbate fatigue, stress in daily life, and decreased concentration, and may contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease [ 3 ].…”

Lack of sleep also increases susceptibility to infections owing to changes in human hormones, reduced immunity, and inflammatory biomarker expression [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 5 ].…”
