Association Between Serum Vitamin D Levels and Ketosis Episodes in Hospitalized Patients with Newly Diagnosed Ketosis-Prone Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and the onset of ketosis in newly diagnosed patients with ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes (KPT2D). Patients and Methods: A total of 162 patients with non-autoimmune newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus were included in this crosssectional study. Patients were classified into KPT2D (n = 71) or non-ketotic type 2 diabetes (NKT2D, n = 91). Anthropometric parameters, islet functions, biochemical parameters, and body composition were de… Show more

“…Diabetic ketosis is one of the acute complications of diabetes mellitus. Serum 25(OH)D 3 levels are lower in ketosis-prone T2DM compared to non-ketosis-prone T2DM ( 39 , 40 ), and serum 25(OH)D 3 levels are related to the severity of pancreatitis concurrent with diabetic ketoacidosis ( 41 ).…”

“…Also in Kenya, Said J et al did not find associations between insulin sensitivity, β-cell secretion and vitamin D in diabetic patients [13]. He X et al, in China, showed that low vitamin D levels were signifi-cantly associated with episodes of ketoacidosis in patients with atypical DM [14].…”

“…He et al reported a correlation between vitamin D and ketosis in their T2DM participants. 8 Tang et al found that a poor vitamin D status may be related to diabetic foot in Chinese T2DM participants. 9 Ahmed et al reported on the clinical value of vitamin D3 in diabetic retinopathy (DR) in the Qatari population with T2DM.…”
