Association between serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations with non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease in Korean population

Abstract: Serum calcium and phosphorus levels are significantly associated with NAFLD. Further investigation is needed to verify whether calcium and phosphorus levels indicate a higher risk of NAFLD.

“…In addition, lean NAFLD patients also consumed higher levels of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and manganese than the control group. Previous study in human found that serum phosphorus levels were significantly associated with NAFLD (odds ratio: 1.36, 95% confidence interval: 1.26–1.47, P < 0.001) . However, most studies found that NAFLD patients had low consumption of potassium, magnesium, and manganese .…”

“…Despite this, multiple studies have failed to find a beneficial response to vitamin D supplementation in liver function or histology in patients with NAFLD [53,56,58]. Furthermore, vitamin D therapy is clinically limited due to its effect on calcium homeostasis and potential for hypercalcemia, a risk factor for NAFLD [53,60]. Vitamin A has not been studied extensively in patients with NAFLD, but like Vitamin D, a significant number of patients with NAFLD have been noted to have vitamin A deficiency [61,62].…”

“…However, studies are lacking. Cross-sectional analyses have noted that calcium, phosphorus, and sodium intake have been associated with increased rates of NAFLD while magnesium has been inversely related with NAFLD [60,63,64]. In animal studies, reduction in AST and ALT in mice with NAFLD was noted following zinc and selenium co-supplementation [65,66].…”

“…Evidence on the role of phosphorous intake and NAFLD development remains limited. Although animal studies have demonstrated an association between low phosphorous intake and insulin resistance (72), and between altered glucose (73) and cholesterol metabolism in rats (74), contrary to these findings, human studies have shown an association between higher serum phosphorous levels and NAFLD (75), and between CVD risk factors and events (76,77). Further studies examining the role of phosphorus and selenium in liver health are warranted.…”
