“…Reduced MTHFR enzyme activity can also alter genome instability with free radicals causing accumulation of toxins [ 14 ]. To date, numerous epidemiological studies and meta-analyses [ 9 , 20 , 21 , 22 ] confirmed that MTHFR C677T [ 10 , 17 , 23 , 24 ] and MTHFR A1298C [ 13 , 24 , 25 ] polymorphisms are associated with HDP; however, with inconsistent findings [ 26 , 27 , 28 ].…”

“…Further evidence has indicated that HDP can result from epigenetic factors, as well as modifications and interactions involving genetic factors and environmental toxicants [ 29 , 30 ]. Exposure to air polluted by fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) [ 26 , 27 ], ozone (O 3 ), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) [ 29 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ] can trigger inflammatory reactions, increase blood coagulation, and decrease placental circulation. Consequently, these toxicants can lead to HDP [ 30 , 37 ], though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear [ 29 , 35 ].…”

“…There are conflicting results regarding thrombophilia in severe preclampsia in the literature. While a significant correlation is found between thrombophilia and severe preeclampsia [10,11,12] other pregnancy complications in some studies [13,14,15] there is not any correlation in some others [16].…”
