Association between periodontitis and chronic kidney disease by functional atherosclerosis status among older Japanese individuals: A cross‐sectional study

Abstract: Aim This study aimed to clarify the influence of functional atherosclerosis on the association between periodontitis and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Materials and Methods A cross‐sectional study of 998 older Japanese individuals aged 60–99 years who participated in an oral health check‐up was conducted. Early and advanced periodontitis were defined as periodontal pocket depth of 4.0–5.9 mm and ≥6.0 mm, respectively. Functional atherosclerosis was defined as cardio‐ankle vascular index ≥9.0. Results Of the 99… Show more

“…However, this concept has not become widespread yet. Evaluating vascular health using a combination of structural atherosclerosis and functional atherosclerosis could be efficient in daily clinical practice [74,75]. Further investigation based on this concept is necessary.…”

“…In addition, one of the most interesting aspects currently facing dentistry is the possible connection between chronic oral inflammatory processes of infectious origin (chronic apical periodontitis and periodontal disease) and systemic health status [1,3,4]. Several epidemiological studies highlight the connection between chronic oral inflammation and systemic diseases, such as ischemic heart disease [5], hypertension [6], diabetes [7], metabolic syndrome [8], renal disease [9,10], inflammatory bowel disease [11,12], rheumatoid arthritis [13], osteoporosis [14], memory loss [15], adverse pregnancy outcomes [16], cancer [17,18], respiratory diseases [19] and COVID-19 [20].…”

“…Regarding CKD, a significant positive association between PD and CKD has been established (Deschamps‐Lenhardt et al, 2019; Nylund et al, 2018; Ruokonen et al, 2019; Shimizu et al, 2023). Moreover, PD is universally present in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, and the presentation of periodontitis influences their systemic inflammatory state (Chen et al, 2023).…”
