Association between maternal vitamin E status and alpha‐tocopherol levels in the newborn and colostrum

Abstract: Vitamin E is important because of its antioxidant activity in situations of oxidative stress, especially postnatally. Hence, the objective was to verify whether maternal alpha-tocopherol level is associated with the alpha-tocopherol levels of the newborn and colostrum. This is a cross-sectional study of 58 women and their term newborns from a public hospital. Blood and colostrum were collected to measure alpha-tocopherol levels by high-performance liquid chromatography. Mothers with serum alpha-tocopherol leve… Show more

“…In this sense, the recommended daily intake of vitamin E for Brazilian nursing women [32] is nearly half that recommended in North America by the Institute of Medicine [4,12]. The vitamin E status biomarker (serum α-tocopherol/cholesterol ratio; µmol/mmol) indicates that the prevalence of vitamin E deficiency (<2.25 µmol/mmol) [2,4] increased from 37 to 63% of the volunteers from early- to mid-lactation.…”

“…In addition to serving as retinoid precursors, these carotenoids are transferred to breast milk and, together with lycopene and lutein, might contribute to breastfed infant health, as they present potential bioactivity. The primary function of vitamin E is related to its activity as a potent free radical scavenger and, although overt signs of deficiency are rare, pre-term infants might be more susceptible to associated illnesses [2].…”

“…Furthermore, most of the studies did not report mean BMI, ethnicity, educational level or per capita income. Only five studies 11,[31][32][33][34][35] reported on the participants' educational level, and showed that the majority had low levels (data not shown). Six studies 11,12,[32][33][34][35][36] reported on per capita income and showed that the majority of the participants had monthly per capita income of less than one minimum wage (data not shown).…”
