Association between human papillomavirus and endometrial adenocarcinoma

Abstract: Several studies have suggested a possible role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the pathogenesis of endometrial carcinoma. The aim of the study was to investigate the presence of HPV DNA in endometrium cancers and nonneoplastic endometrium. Sixty endometrial adenocarcinomas with and without squamous differentiation and the nonneoplastic endometrium tissue of fifty-six of the same patients were analyzed for the presence of family 16 and family 6 HPV DNA by using chromogenic in situ hybridization technique on fo… Show more

“…Intestinal differentiation has been described in a mucinous endometrial adenocarcinoma (18) but HPV is thought not to be causally associated with endometrial neoplasia (3,19,20). The morphology and immunoprofile of the intestinal glands in our case are identical to those of the endocervical AIS, and HPV 31 was detected in both the polyp and the endocervical biopsy material.…”

“…21Y23 It was also reported that HPV is one of the causative factors of squamous differentiation in the endometrium. 24,25 We applied whole exome sequencing to investigate the molecular profile of a low-grade endometrioid carcinoma, as well as of a lung metastasis, in a female patient. The primary and metastatic tumors shared some of the mutations, and GO analysis showed an enrichment on cellular response to estradiol stimulus, indicating that the lung metastasis indeed origins from the primary endometrium tumor.…”

“…7 Furthermore, cervical HPV infection impairs the physiological protective capacity of the uterine cervix. 30 Studies employing in situ hybridization have detected HPV DNA in non-neoplastic endometrium in 19.6 31 and 60% 32 of biopsies. It is possible that initial infection of the endometrium is facilitated by regular menstrual shedding (akin to wounding), whereas the lack of menstrual shedding, endometrial decidualisation, and immune suppression during pregnancy contributes to HPV persistence and growth.…”

“…HPV DNA was detected using the GenPoint HPV DNA Probe cocktail (identifies 13 high-risk HPV types: 16,18,31,33,35,39,45,51,52,56,58,59, and 68) and the GenPoint Tyramide Signal Amplification system according to the manufacturer's instructions with one modification (the biotinyl tyramide solution was added to each slide for five instead of 15 min) (Dako, Glostrup, Denmark). Cells were imaged using light microscopy.…”
