SUMMARY. We investigated the association between phenotypes of histocompatability antigen (HLA) and nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus in two populations-healthy laboratory workers and patients attending an outpatients' clinic. When data from the two sources were pooled, it was evident that the presence of HLA-DR3 was associated with carriage, and the presence of HLA-DR2, HLA-DRl and HLA-Bw35 with lack of carriage. However, since each person may have two antigenic specificities encoded at the HLA-A, the HLA-B, and the HLA-DR loci, the carriage of the organism was analysed for paired combinations of the more frequent phenotypes. For example, the lack of carriage evident with HLA-DRl was more marked with the DR1-All and DR 1-B7 combinations while the predisposition towards carriage shown with HLA-DR3 was more marked with the DR3-DR5 combination. The importance of the analysis of antigen combinations is discussed in relation to association of single antigens with carriage of S. aureus.

The generation of dental caries in humans is thought to be regulated by many intrinsic and social factors. In this study, we examined the effect of MHC on susceptibility to dental caries in mice. The mean carious score of BALB.K/Ola, a H-2 congenic strain in which the H-2 region derived from C3H/HeJ (H-2^k/k) is introduced into BALB/cJ (H-2^d/d), was markedly reduced as compared with that of its recipient strain (BALB/cJ). Mating experiments confirmed a strong genetic linkage between H-2 haplotype and caries susceptibility. These results demonstrate that one of the genetic factors of the susceptibility in the mouse is mapped within the H-2 region. This finding of a host genetic factor influencing the generation of dental caries will help in developing clinical preventive strategies.

Dental caries still remain one of the most prevalent infectious diseases, affecting populations and individuals unequivocally. It is observed that people with similar behavioral risk present different caries rates. Susceptibility to caries results from both the host and environmental factors that complement each other and may result in increased incidence of caries or greater resistance to it. Numerous studies of twins, families and animal models initiated in the early decades of the previous century provided strong evidence for the genetic component of dental caries development. The succeeding research, identifying specific genes and genetic markers and confirming the genetic correlation of dental caries, explained the reasons behind the greater susceptibility to caries in some diseases like Epidermolysis bullosa. Many inherited determinants are well established. The most recognizable are the structure of the hard dental tissue, tooth morphology including depth of occlusal fissures and surface characteristic of the enamel, time of eruption, alignment of the teeth in dental arches, flow rate of the saliva and its constituents, immunologic response to cariogenic microorganisms in oral cavity. An important role is also played by inherited thresholds for tastes and smells, which affect taste preferences and thus dietary habits and activity of specific enzymes participating in regulation processes on various stages of development and subsequent physiologic functioning of the organism. The knowledge of genetic basis of caries will enable us to identify high-risk groups and provide them with targeted screening, preventive measures and interventional strategies (Dent. Med. Probl. 2016, 53, 3, 413-418).
