Association Between Electronic Cigarette Use and Openness to Cigarette Smoking Among US Young Adults

Abstract: Ever use of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products was associated with being open to cigarette smoking. This study does not allow us to assess the directionality of this association, so future longitudinal research is needed to illuminate tobacco use behaviors over time as well as provide additional insight on the relationship between ENDS use and conventional cigarette use among young adult populations.

“…[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] E-cigarette users, representing several age groups and geographic locations, had 2 to 4 times the odds of indicating an intention to use cigarettes as never users, 7,8 results consistent with those we reported in the CHS. 9 To date there have been 3 reports from prospective cohort studies examining the relationship between e-cigarette use and subsequent initiation of combustible cigarette use in adolescence, including a study of 9th-grade students (mean age 14.1), 14 a second study of 9th and 10th-grade students (mean age 14.7), 15 and another small study of 16-to 26-year-olds, with few never-smoking e-cigarette users at baseline that was not able to examine associations within specific developmental periods in this age range.…”

“…Odds ratios for use of various alternative tobacco products as a risk factor for using another type of alternative tobacco product varied from 1.52 (95% CI 1.12, 2.07) to 60.97 (95% CI 31.38, 118.45) among respondents 27 . Additionally, studies associate e-cigarette use with increased intention to smoke cigarettes, openness to trying cigarettes, and the actual initiation of cigarette smoking [31][32][33] . However, despite these findings, it should be noted that a significant proportion of US adolescent hookah users in this sample also have never used cigarettes (33.7%) or e-cigarettes (36%).…”

“…Though surveys have shown that only a small proportion of young non-smokers use ENDS on a regular basis, a few recent studies have suggested an association between ENDS use and openness to cigarette smoking. 60 Though its extent and significance are not clear, the history of the tobacco industry, their current interest in ENDS and their marketing that appears to be targeted at youth causes concern.…”
