Association between dietary inflammatory index and anthropometric indicators of adiposity in Brazilian adolescents

Abstract: Background: Diet may play a role in the regulation of obesity-related low-grade chronic inflammation. Objective: Assess the association of the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) with anthropometric indicators of adiposity in Brazilian adolescents. Methods: Data were collected from 71 740 adolescents (12-17 years old) examined in the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents. Food consumption was assessed by means of one 24-h dietary recall, and DII was estimated using 39 food parameters. The body mass index (wei… Show more

“…Besides obesity is often characterized as a state of low-grade chronic inflammation, it could also be partly the consequence of a previous low-grade chronic inflammation. So, it is possible to mention that a bidirectional association between inflammation and obesity may exist (Blaudt et al, 2023;Ruiz-Canela et al, 2015). Following a diet with a low inflammatory index score was associated with desired levels of obesity indices (Ruiz-Canela et al, 2015).…”

“…Dietary factors have an important role in the regulation of low-grade inflammation which is a precursor to obesity and obesity-related disorders. (Blaudt et al, 2023;Yi et al, 2021;Muhammad et al, 2019); Healthy dietary patterns like the Mediterranean diet (Med-Diet) could decrease low-grade inflammation through antiinflammatory dietary components whereas Western dietary patterns could increase through proinflammatory factors (Tsigalou et al, 2020;Nikniaz et al, 2018;Ruiz-Canela et al, 2015). A Western-type diet, which is characterized by a high intake of processed and red meat, refined grains and high-fat dairy products is associated with higher concentrations of inflammation markers such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6 (Bujtor et al, 2021).…”

“…Positive DII scores indicate pro-inflammatory diets, while negative DII scores indicate anti-inflammatory diets, with higher absolute values indicating greater anti-inflammatory/pro-inflammatory effects. It has been proposed that numerous inflammatory disorders, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, have a favorable correlation with DII scores ( 11 15 ). Systemic low-grade inflammation is one of the most important pathogenic processes in CKD, and it is also influenced by the dietary status of patients.…”

“…Body fat is hormonally active and produces cytokines and acute-phase proteins that increase the production and circulation of factors related to inflammation in all age groups, including adolescents [5,6]. Current evidence also points to Nutrients 2023, 15, 4640 2 of 14 lifestyles, such as the level of physical activity [7] and eating habits [8], as inflammatory stimuli regardless of nutritional status.…”
