Association between de Quervain syndrome and herpes zoster: a population-based cohort study

Abstract: ObjectiveBoth physical diseases such as infection and chronic pain and psychological disorders such as depression have been associated with herpes zoster (HZ) reactivation. However, the relationship between de Quervain syndrome (DQS), a painful tenosynovitis and HZ remains unclear. We investigated whether DQS increases the risk of HZ reactivation.DesignA retrospective population-based cohort study.SettingTaiwan.ParticipantsWe used a subset of Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database, the Longitudin… Show more

“…17 Disease prevalence is high in women with approximately 1.3% of the population afflicted, in comparison with 0.5% in men. 18 The disease is commonly associated with chronic overuse of the wrist and is related to the following risk factors: age (between 30 and 50), sex (more common in women), pregnancy, postpartum care of newborn, and jobs or activities that involve constant use of the wrist. 19 Most common nonsurgical treatments are behavioural modifications, NSAIDs, thumb spica splinting and transcutaneous steroid injections into the first dorsal compartment.…”

“…The reactivation of VZV can be caused by stress [7]. Stress from musculoskeletal-related [8][9][10][11] and urogenitalrelated [12][13][14] chronic pain and endocrine-related diseases [15] have been identified as being associated with HZ development. Pulmonary TB may be a stressor for infected individuals and may lead to the development of HZ.…”

“…The HZ vaccine may be administrated to high-risk individuals [ 5 ]. Stress caused by physical illness may induce the reactivation of VZV leading to HZ [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Liao et al and Choi et al have reported that psychological diseases, such as depression, also increase the risk of HZ [ 14 , 15 ].…”
