Association Between Daily Alcohol Intake and Risk of All-Cause Mortality

Abstract: ImportanceA previous meta-analysis of the association between alcohol use and all-cause mortality found no statistically significant reductions in mortality risk at low levels of consumption compared with lifetime nondrinkers. However, the risk estimates may have been affected by the number and quality of studies then available, especially those for women and younger cohorts.ObjectiveTo investigate the association between alcohol use and all-cause mortality, and how sources of bias may change results.Data Sour… Show more

“…As advanced liver fibrosis is a major risk factor for mortality among HCV‐infected people [11, 35] (adjusted hazard ratio = 3.71 in our study sample), we may expect unhealthy alcohol use to increase all‐cause and liver‐related mortality in this population [36, 37]. The protective effect of moderate alcohol use on mortality we found in people with no history of injection drug use has previously been found in some general population studies [38–40]. This effect, which is more present in the context of cardiovascular mortality [41], may be the result of confounding effects of health behaviours [42, 43] not present in PHID.…”

“…Yet the latest meta-analyses, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association , now conclude that this was a selection effect (Zhao et al, 2023). In some studies, the population of non-drinkers included former alcoholics who have gone sober.…”

“…29 Lifestyle or behavioural changes may also contribute to the increased mortality risk in LLD. Severe depression may affect the engagement or interaction of the person with the health care system (e.g., low motivation, lower treatment adherence) or provoke an unhealthy lifestyle, including sedentarism, 30 low physical activity, increased alcohol intake, 31 and smoking, 32 which are all are associated with an increased mortality risk.…”
