Association Between Clinical Severity of Childhood Asthma and Serum Leptin Levels

Abstract: Leptin levels correlated with the clinical severity of asthma and this was suggested to be associated with the severity of inflammation in asthma. More studies are required to evaluate leptin levels in predicting asthma severity.

“…Clinic-based studies of prepubertal asthmatic children, mostly boys, showed that greater serum leptin concentrations were associated with greater clinical asthma severity [ 61 ], lower peak expiratory flow rates [ 60 ], greater severity of exercise induced bronchoconstriction [ 56 ], and higher serum total IgE concentrations [ 57 ]. Further, some studies have found these associations to be independent of BMI [ 56 , 61 ]. In another study of peripubertal/postpubertal asthmatic subjects, Kattan et al found a positive correlation between serum leptin and maximum asthma symptom days among girls.…”

“…Serum leptin concentrations were positively associated with NHLBI category of asthma severity in a study of both sexes, regardless of BMI [31]. In a separate unadjusted analysis of prepubertal asthmatic children, mostly boys, serum leptin was associated with lower peak expiratory flow rates [29] and higher serum total IgE levels [28].…”

“…Although these findings were not entirely reproduced in a human interventional study of mild atopic asthma [37], epidemiologic evidence suggests that greater serum leptin concentrations are associated with more severe asthma, particularly among prepubertal boys and peripubertal/postpubertal girls [31, 32]. …”

“…The serum OX40L levels were significantly increased in asthmatic children during exacerbations and correlated with total eosinophil count . Serum leptin levels and body mass index have also related to the severity of inflammation in childhood asthma . However, further investigations are needed to clarify the role of these systemic biomarkers in various aspects of asthma.…”
