Association between Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Lung Cancer: A Case-Control Study in Southern Chinese and a Meta-Analysis

Abstract: BackgroundLung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) share a common risk factor in cigarette smoking and a large portion of patients with lung cancer suffer from COPD synchronously. We therefore hypothesized that COPD is an independent risk factor for lung cancer. Our aim was to investigate the intrinsic linkage of COPD (or emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthma) and lung cancer.MethodsThe present hospital-based case-control study included 1,069 patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer and… Show more

“…63,64 Finally, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which is an accelerated decline in lung functioning, is highly related to LC . 6566 Moreover, COPD is also a risk factor for CVD events such as heart failure. 62,66 In sum, LC is reported to be related to a number of CVD risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, angina, MI, stroke, AFib, COPD, and smoking.…”

“…Cigarette smoking is a common risk factor for NSCLC and COPD. COPD is thought to increase the risk of lung cancer [10] and is even considered an independent risk factor [11]. Patients diagnosed with lung cancer often experience COPD symptoms [12].…”

“…The amount of smoking was evaluated as pack-years (pack-year = number of packs per day × years of smoking). A cut-off of 20 pack-years was set to define heavy smokers [14,25,26]. …”
