Aim To synthesize the effect of music intervention on patients with cancer‐related pain in randomized controlled trials. Design A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials following Cochrane methods. Data resources Systematic searches were conducted in Science Direct, Web of Science, Springer Link, Networked Digital Library of Theses & Dissertations, Ovid, CINAHL, Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Proquest, Council of Higher Education National Thesis Center, ULAKBIM Turkish National Databases for studies published in English and Turkish without year limitation. The review period covered 1978–March 2018. Review methods The risk of bias of eligible studies was evaluated by two researchers using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. Results Six studies with 593 participants met the inclusion criteria. Music intervention was generally applied by the passive listening method, which ranged from 30–60 min and 1–3 sessions. No significant publication bias was found in the main outcomes. As a result of the meta‐analysis, it was found that music interventions have a moderate effect on cancer‐related pain. Conclusion Music intervention can have a positive effect on the management of cancer pain. The studies reported no adverse events. Nurses can use music intervention to manage cancer‐related pain. Impact The meta‐analysis addressed the effect of music intervention on cancer‐related pain. The statistical result indicates that music intervention was moderately effective in cancer‐related pain. The findings of this study will contribute to the application of effective music intervention by nurses and will provide guidance for the development of studies related to the effect of music intervention on cancer‐related pain.

Binaural beats are an auditory illusion perceived when two or more pure tones of similar frequencies are presented dichotically through stereo headphones. Although this phenomenon is thought to facilitate state changes (e.g., relaxation), few empirical studies have reported on whether binaural beats produce changes in autonomic arousal. Therefore, the present study investigated the effects of binaural beating on autonomic dynamics [heart rate variability (HRV)] during post-exercise relaxation. Subjects (n = 21; 18–29 years old) participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study during which binaural beats and placebo were administered over two randomized and counterbalanced sessions (within-subjects repeated-measures design). At the onset of each visit, subjects exercised for 20-min; post-exercise, subjects listened to either binaural beats (‘wide-band’ theta-frequency binaural beats) or placebo (carrier tones) for 20-min while relaxing alone in a quiet, low-light environment. Dependent variables consisted of high-frequency (HF, reflecting parasympathetic activity), low-frequency (LF, reflecting sympathetic and parasympathetic activity), and LF/HF normalized powers, as well as self-reported relaxation. As compared to the placebo visit, the binaural-beat visit resulted in greater self-reported relaxation, increased parasympathetic activation and increased sympathetic withdrawal. By the end of the 20-min relaxation period there were no observable differences in HRV between binaural-beat and placebo visits, although binaural-beat associated HRV significantly predicted subsequent reported relaxation. Findings suggest that listening to binaural beats may exert an acute influence on both LF and HF components of HRV and may increase subjective feelings of relaxation.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between rest heart rate (HR) and the components of the auditory evoked-related potentials (ERPs) at rest in women. We investigated 21 healthy female university students between 18 and 24 years old. We performed complete audiological evaluation and measurement of heart rate for 10 minutes at rest (heart rate monitor Polar RS800CX) and performed ERPs analysis (discrepancy in frequency and duration). There was a moderate negative correlation of the N1 and P3a with rest HR and a strong positive correlation of the P2 and N2 components with rest HR. Larger components of the ERP are associated with higher rest HR.
