Association between arterial pressure and coronary artery calcification

Abstract: Of the cardiovascular risk factors, SBP and pulse pressure display the strongest relationship with angiographic detection of CAC. Mechanistic studies need to clarify whether hypertension causes CAC, or whether coronary calcium deposition serves as a marker for a higher degree of vascular calcification and, thus, impaired vascular compliance and higher blood pressure levels.

“…31,32 Among all the CVD risk factors detected on ABPM, PP and SBP are most strongly associated with angiographically detected coronary artery calcification. 33 Non-dipping, reverse dipping, nocturnal hypertension, nocturnal hypotension and autonomic failure are patterns that are easily recognized with ABPM, and with this recognition comes an opportunity for intervention and risk reduction. 34 The 7-day ABPM in this study used gender-and agematched reference standards.…”

“…The relationship between HT and CAD have been investigated by many researchers and coronary artery disease diagnosed with angiography has been shown to have a strong correlation with systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure (23). A study in Egypt found hypertension, unrelated to their ongoing treatment, in 17.3% of 658 patients with ED.…”

“…This stepped strategy would recognize patients with CAC in advance and allow early therapeutic choice before coronary heart disease become symptomatic (24,26). In ESRD patients, standard radiographs, echocardiography, and pulse pressure have been found to be suitable procedures for predicting the presence of CAC (15)(16)(17)(18).…”

“…Therefore, in CKD patients, it is important to find simple and inexpensive tests for the preliminary screening. Standard radiographs, echocardiography, and pulse pressure may predict the presence of CAC in ESRD patients (15)(16)(17)(18).…”
