Association between apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism and Alzheimer's disease in Uighur and Han populations

Abstract: Aim: Currently, there are almost 100 genes related to Alzheimer's disease (AD), and studies have indicated that apolipoprotein E (APO E) e4 allele is a genetic risk factor of AD. However, there have been no reports of the distributions of APO E genotypes and allele frequencies in Uighur and Han AD patients. Methods: We analyzed APO E gene polymorphism in 209 AD cases diagnosed based on National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Associ… Show more

“…This finding is similar to that for the Chinese Uyghur ethnic people [15]. However, compared with the Saudi Arabia Muslims who are believed to be the ancestors of the Chinese Hui ethnic people, the frequency of ε 4 allele in the Hui ethnic group (3.9%) was close to that in the Arabs (3.9–6.3%) [27, 28].…”

“…Within the Chinese population, studies have shown that apoE ε 4 increases the risk of MCI in the elderly Han ethnic group (the majority group) [11, 12], but few studies have examined the association between the ε 4 allele and MCI among different ethnic minority groups in China, although the frequency of apoE genotypes has been found to differ across different ethnic groups [13–15]. China has fifty-five national minorities, among which the Hui ethnic group is the largest minority group.…”

“…The association between APOE polymorphisms and AD risk has been investigated in Caucasian, Hispanic, African American, Japanese, and small numbers of Chinese Han populations. 10 – 12 Other studies of candidate genes and AD risk in Chinese Han population used APOE ε4 –carrying status as a stratification sign but did not focus on APOE itself. 13 Here we investigated a large number of 875 SAD and 1,195 controls of Chinese Han to explore the association between APOE polymorphisms and AD risk.…”

“…We have investigated the combined effect of PSEN1 and APOE polymorphisms on the risk of LOAD, which have also been not observed in other studies [1,6,26]. Also, when we have considered together PSEN1 genotype distribution and ε4 allele carrying in our patient group, it was not found any significant differences between them (p>0.05).…”
