Association between Antibody to the Chlamydial Heat-Shock Protein and Tubal Infertility

Abstract: To determine the prevalence of antibody to Chlamydia heat-shock protein 60 (C-hsp60) in women with tubal infertility, an ELISA using purified recombinant C-hsp60 was developed. Antibody to C. trachomatis was present in 32 (72.7%) of 44 women with tubal infertility compared with 9 (32.1%) of 28 with other causes of infertility and 55 (28.9%) of 190 pregnant women (P < .001). Among the seropositive women, antibody to C-hsp60 was present in 26 (81.3%) of 32 women with tubal infertility compared with 0 of 9 with o… Show more

“…A chlamydial protein, hsp60, has been suggested to be the mediator of detrimental effects of chlamydia on tubal function [116][117][118]. Chlamydial hsp60 can trigger both a humoral and cell-mediated immune response [119].…”

“…The introduction of commercial PCR in the routine clinical microbiology laboratory is an important advance in our ability to diagnose asymptomatic chlamydial infections in male partners of infertile couples (Toye et al, 1996;Gdoura et al, 2001). Nucleic acid amplification tests are considered to be a more suitable method for screening and diagnosing chlamydial infections, but one major problem with them is the presence of potential inhibitors in clinical specimens that can lead to false negative results.…”

“…The involvement of the heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60) of C. trachomatis in the immunopathogenesis of trachoma [2], pelvic inflammatory disease [3], tubal infertility [4] and ectopic pregnancy [5] is well known. It is also known that persistent C. trachomatis infection in cell culture leads to increased expression of Hsp60 proteins in chlamydia particles [6].…”
