Association between adverse perinatal outcomes and amino acid levels measured with nutrient questionnaire in adolescent pregnancies

Abstract: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study evaluating the amino acid levels in adolescent pregnancies. According to this study, some amino acid levels were lower in adolescent pregnancies and associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Further studies with maternal and perinatal outcomes are needed to demonstrate the effects of these amino acids in such pregnancies.

“…In peripheral blood the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio has been proposed as a marker of MS disease activity, with a higher ratio in MS, but with no association to progressive disease nor EDSS in a large cohort [67]. While other smaller cohort studies found an association between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and EDSS score [68,69]. In plasma, measures of neutrophil associated factors NE, CXCL1, and CXCL5 correlate with MS lesion burden and clinical disability [36].…”

“…Protein intake exceeded 67% of the EAR and most of the sources were plant-based, as reported in another study conducted in a low socioeconomic area [23]. Plant-based proteins are known for their low biological value and if not taken with starches, which are able to complement their limited amino acid content, a deficiency of essential amino acids could result [24]. Essential amino acids are necessary for growth and development of the foetus as demonstrated in a study that evaluated the amino acid levels in adolescent pregnancies and showed that lower levels were associated with adverse perinatal outcomes [24].…”

Again, meat is known as the best source of amino acids and failure to include it in the diet could lead to inadequate dietary intake if proper substitution is not done.…”

“…Secondly, all participants were asked to fill the detailed 34-item nutrient habits and pregnancy-related features questionnaire that evaluates attitudes about food consumption frequency for red meat, chicken meat, fish, egg, legume, milk and milk products, nuts, fruits, vegetables, walnut, hazelnut and supplements intake as Folic acid, Omega 3, Vitamin D and sunlight exposure. The nutrient habits questionnaire was evaluated by the nutrient database program (BeBiS software program; Turkish version of Bebispro for Windows, Stuttgart, Germany) designed to evaluate daily intake estimates of various nutrients by the food consumption frequencies which reflects the antenatal period of intake (10). BeBiS is a software program that contains the data more than 20,000 foods and reports nutritional elements such as calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and antioxidants.…”
