Association and Dissociation of Lithium Cyanocuprates in Ethereal Solvents

Abstract: We use a combination of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and electrical conductivity measurements to probe the ions present in ethereal solutions of lithium cyanocuprates. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry shows that solutions of LiCuR2·LiCN and Li0.8CuR0.8(CN) (R = Me, Et, n Bu, s Bu, t Bu, and Ph) in diethyl ether contain Li n–1Cu n R2n – and Li n–1Cu n R n (CN) n – anions, respectively. Analogous species are also observed for solutions of LiCu t Bu2·LiCN and Li0.8Cu t Bu0.8(CN) in 2-me… Show more

“…The higher conductivities recorded for the tert ‐butyl system indicate that sterically demanding substituents facilitate heterolytic dissociation. We noted a similar behavior for the cyanocuprates LiCuR 2 ⋅LiCN . An important difference between RMgCl⋅LiCl and LiCuR 2 ⋅LiCN lies in the higher molar conductivities of the latter, which exceed those of the former by one order of magnitude .…”

“…An important difference between RMgCl⋅LiCl and LiCuR 2 ⋅LiCN lies in the higher molar conductivities of the latter, which exceed those of the former by one order of magnitude . On the basis of the degree of heterolytic dissociation estimated for the cyanocuprates, we thus infer that, at synthetically relevant concentrations in THF, at most a few percent of the turbo‐Grignard reagents undergo heterolytic dissociation.…”

“…For the present purpose, such a procedure involving frequent infusion of aqueous solutions would be impractical, however, because the analysis of intact organometallic species is severely hampered by residual traces of moisture. [16,54] Theoretical exact m/z ratios and isotope patterns were calculated with the DataAnalysis software package (Bruker Daltonik).…”

“…Like the free organocuprate complexes Li n −1 Cu n R 2 n − , the adducts Li n −1 Cu n Bu 2 n (FN) n − show a pronounced solvent effect. As for the former, the shift toward higher aggregation states observed upon changing the solvent from THF to the less polar Et 2 O can be explained by the poorer ability of the latter to solvate Li + ions and the resulting prevalence of contact ion pairs . This parallel again highlights the close similarities between free organocuprates and their adducts with fumaronitrile.…”
