Associated factors of readiness to change in young adult risky drinkers

Abstract: These results lend support to the concept that young adults are using alcohol to modulate their emotions. Furthermore, resultant severity of consequences from drinking may play an important role in their readiness to change risky drinking. This may be especially true for females, who reported greater emotional distress, and for Hispanic/Latinos and Blacks, who reported greater drinking severity with greater emotional distress. Caregivers may be better equipped to address young adult alcohol use with this added… Show more

“…Demographics and psychiatric symptoms were largely unrelated to patients’ SOC, in contrast to other studies (Abdullah & Yam, 2005; Dotinga et al, 2005; Garber et al, 2008). Unlike prior studies (Alley et al, 2018; Bradshaw et al, 2013; Jackson et al, 2003), our study did not focus on patients with any particular presenting problem and this heterogeneity may have masked results that would emerge in more homogeneous samples.…”

“…Greater mental health symptom severity is associated with later SOC in intimate partner violence victims (Edwards et al, 2006; Johnson & Johnson, 2013). More severe alcohol problems are associated with higher readiness to reduce alcohol use (Alley et al, 2018; Williams et al, 2006). In overweight patients, perceiving excess weight as a health risk is associated with a higher readiness to improve diet and exercise (Wee et al, 2005).…”

“…Specifically, women used more MVMs, individual vitamins/minerals, herbals, and joint health products than men. Sex differences may be associated with greater overall health awareness in women, as evidenced by the fact that women are more likely to seek medical care ( 38–40 ) and are more likely than men to make behavioral changes to improve health ( 41–43 ). Although women had higher use than men in most DS categories, men had higher use of proteins/AAs, combination products, and purported prohormones.…”

“…Studies among adults find that readiness to change may vary by criminal justice status and substance use treatment modality and point to the importance of readiness in predicting substance use outcomes ( De Leon et al, 2000 , Melnick et al, 2001 , Melnick et al, 2014 ). While studies of readiness to change substance use have been conducted among young adults ( Alley et al, 2018 , Caviness et al, 2013 , Goodman et al, 2015 , Palfai et al, 2016 ), none that we are aware have been conducted among JIYA despite their higher risk profiles.…”
