Assistive VR Gym: Interactions with Real People to Improve Virtual Assistive Robots

Abstract: Versatile robotic caregivers could benefit millions of people worldwide, including older adults and people with disabilities. Recent work has explored how robotic caregivers can learn to interact with people through physics simulations, yet transferring what has been learned to real robots remains challenging. Virtual reality (VR) has the potential to help bridge the gap between simulations and the real world. We present Assistive VR Gym (AVR Gym), which enables real people to interact with virtual assistive r… Show more

“…We evaluated the transformer and Assistive Tele-op system across a variety of tasks representing industrial [18,31], household [4,8], and caregiving [7,10] task scenarios. For this, we used both existing data from the Roboturk [18] simulation dataset covering pick-and-place and nut assembly tasks, as well as new data for other tasks that we collected in VR.…”

“…The former require carefully tuned reward functions, while the latter can be laborious to collect. Virtual reality [7,32] can help, but the human effort remains considerable for complex tasks, and when many demonstrations are required. Shared autonomy [9,12,14,25] offers a better solution to collecting large-scale data.…”

“…The task would be even more challenging if we want to perform goal-conditioned water scooping, e.g., scooping a specific amount of water from a tank and moving it to a targeted place. However, goalconditioned water scooping can be very helpful in industry or daily life, because it can bring convenience for downstream tasks, such as water transportation [5], water pouring [6], [7], and caregiving [8], [9].…”
