Assimilation of sea surface temperature in the Northwest Pacific Ocean and its marginal seas using the ensemble Kalman filter

Abstract: Satellite-borne sea surface temperature (SST) data were assimilated with the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) in a Northwest Pacific Ocean circulation model to examine the effect of data assimilation. The model domain included the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean and its marginal seas, such as the Yellow Sea and East/Japan Sea. The performance of the data assimilation was evaluated by comparing the simulated ocean state with that observed. Spatially averaged root-meansquared errors in the SST and sea surfac… Show more

“…Several studies have investigated future change in temperature, transport, and circulation in this region using numerical models [Guo et al, 2003[Guo et al, , 2006Isobe and Beardsley, 2006;Lee and Takeshi, 2007;Yang et al, 2012;Cho et al, 2009Cho et al, , 2013Kim et al, 2013;Seo et al, 2010]. There are also a number of downscaling studies for other regions [Meier, 2006;Ådlandsvik and Bentsen, 2007;Sun et al, 2012].…”

“…Detailed simulations using a regional ocean circulation model may increase our understanding and predictability of climate change in the NWP marginal seas. Several studies have investigated future change in temperature, transport, and circulation in this region using numerical models [ Guo et al ., ; Isobe and Beardsley , ; Lee and Takeshi , ; Yang et al ., ; Cho et al ., ; Kim et al ., ; Seo et al ., ]. There are also a number of downscaling studies for other regions [ Meier , ; Ådlandsvik and Bentsen , ; Sun et al ., ].…”

“…The simulation results of CRCM and ECCO2 are generally consistent with each other. Both are featured by high EKE values along the Kuroshio extension, although there is an acceptable northward displacement of the Kuroshio extension in CRCM that is a common problem for regional modeling (e.g., Kang 2008;Seo et al 2010). In addition, the EKE simulated by CRCM is slightly higher.…”

“…The error statistics is forecasted using a Monte Carlo method. The assimilation procedure consists of three steps to update the model state vector (Seo et al 2010(Seo et al , 2015. First, a numerical model integrates all the ensemble members forward in time with an ensemble of initial states to obtain the forecast estimates.…”
