Assessments of Motor Abnormalities on the Grid-Walking and Foot-Fault Tests From Undernutrition in Wistar Rats

Abstract: This study was designed to verify whether different lactation conditions influenced nervous system development. The authors used motor tasks to verify changes in exploratory activity and muscle strength of weaned rats from different litter sizes and evaluated the applicability of the grid-walking test for assessing motor abnormalities caused by undernutrition. Alterations in litter size during the suckling period perturbed the nutritional status of pups, which exhibited body weight differences between the grou… Show more

“…Maturation of neurological reflexes and other developmental landmarks studied in rats are aspects that characterize postnatal development (Lubics et al, 2005 ; Barbosa et al, 2015 ). These tests appear to be the sensitive indicators of the changes induced by environmental adversities like protein malnutrition, infections or other toxicological agents in the intra- and extra- uterine environments (Ten et al, 2003 ; Belluscio et al, 2014 ).…”

“…Grid-walking and foot-fault test were performed just after the MTBI. The apparatus consisted of an elevated 52 × 40 cm 2 metal grid with grid cell of 3 × 3 cm 2 (Barbosa et al, 2015). It was elevated 30 cm above the floor, and the metal grid was made of stainless steel.…”
