An infant's exploration of toys, in the context of the mother's regulating actions, is a setting for cognitive and social development. The aim of this study was to examine the contribution of infant and caregiving conditions to the quantity of focused exploration of toys for 8-month-old infants. Infant biological conditions were gender and birth weight, including a range of both prematurely and term-born infants. The infant behavioural condition was responsiveness to care. Caregiving conditions included mother's education, the supportive, stimulating and sustaining quality of the home environment, and the attention-directing and -supporting behaviour of the mother during play. The direct and indirect effects of these conditions on focused toy exploration were modelled using multiple regression. The sample of 79 mother-infant dyads included 43 full-term infants and 36 premature infants. The mother's attention-directing behaviour was a significant negative predictor of focused toy exploration. Infant birth weight did not have a significant direct effect on focused toy exploration. Birth weight did not interact significantly with responsiveness to care or with any of the caregiving environment conditions to affect focused toy exploration. Further study of infant responses to the mother's attention-regulating and emotion-regulating behaviour during play is recommended to better understand how the caregiving environment supports or thwarts focused toy exploration.

This short-term longitudinal research project was designed to compare the maternal behaviour of mothers whose toddlers had been born preterm with the maternal behaviour of mothers whose toddlers had been born at term ; the outcomes for the toddlers were also assessed. Twenty-one toddlers who had been born preterm with low medical risk (1460-2420 grams) were compared with 21 term toddlers who were matched in term s of social class. The heightened maternal responsiveness that had been observed during the rst year with preterm infants had disappeared by 12 months, and by 20 months it was the mothers whose infants had been born at term who were more vocally responsive. During the second year, the mothers of preterm toddlers were characterised by more maternal control behaviour than were the mothers of term toddlers. Assessments of cognitive and language performance at the gestationally corrected ages of 12 and 20 months did not differentiate the toddlers who had been born preterm and term. In terms of play skills, re ected during interaction with their mothers at 12 and 20 months, the preterm toddlers were more actively involved than were the term toddlers. Despite the successful adjustment of these low-risk preterm toddlers, maternal behaviour was affected by the circum stances of preterm birth, even after 20 months.

“…Overall, research shows that decreased playtime during early education and negative parenting as described above are related to poorer outcomes in children (Baumrind, 1991; Hirsh-Pasek et al, 2009; L'Abate, 2009; McKinney & Renk, 2008b; Paulussen-Hoogeboom et al, 2008; Singer et al, 2006; Van Dalen, 1947). Further, research on play and parenting demonstrates that parents playing with children is beneficial and that parents who believe play to be beneficial will encourage their children to play (Belsky et al, 1984; Blehar et al, 1977; Fisher et al, 2008; Marino, 1988; Strom, 1977). Research links decreased playtime during early education and rigid parenting to poorer outcomes in children. However, it is not known how the effects of playtime extend into emerging adulthood. Thus, the current study examines perceived parenting, perceived childhood playtime, and psychopathology as reported by 328 emerging adults ranging in age from 18 to 25 years. Measures of perceived parenting included the Parental Bonding Instrument, Parental Authority Questionnaire, and Parental Environment Questionnaire. A perceptions of play questionnaire was developed to measure childhood playtime for the current study. Measures of psychopathology included the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory and the Adult Self-Report. Structural equation modeling was used to examine correlations among the latent factors in measurement models and path coefficients in structural models. Results indicate that perceived positive parenting and perceived childhood playtime are associated with reported psychopathology. Further, perceived positive parenting is associated with perceived childhood playtime in females but not in males. Overall, results suggest the importance of childhood playtime as well as gender effects related to parenting. Implications of results are discussed as related to research and practice, including play therapy.
