Assessment on the Effects of Potting Media on Seed Germination and Early Seedling Growth of Pterocarpus erinaceus Poir

Abstract: This study investigated the effects of potting media on seed germination and early seedling growth of Pterocarpus erinaceus Poir at the Forestry Nursery in Jos, Nigeria. Using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replicates, laboratory-tested soil samples, top soil, sharp sand, sharp sand + top soil, sharp sand + top soil + cow dung and sharp sand + top soil + poultry droppings were used in various combinations to assess the growth parameters of P. erinaceus (germination percentage, emergence, plant h… Show more

“…The nicking treatment combined with soaking the seeds in cold water for 12 h was the best pre-germination treatment for K. celebica seed germination. The effectiveness of nicking treatment and cold-water immersion for 12 h in increasing and accelerating seed germination was also reported in several seeds from the Fabaceae family, such as Acacia stenophylla (Khan and Sahito 2017), Vachellia eroloba (Odirile et al 2019), and Pterocarpus erinaceus (Peter et al 2021). This pregermination treatment is quite practical and suitable for smallholder tree growers in nurseries because it is simple and effective in increasing and accelerating seed germination.…”

“…According to Akinlande et al, (2021), top soil should be utilized in the nursery for optimum growth and development of Piliostigma thonningii seedlings for a successful afforestation program. According to Peter et al, (2021), poultry droppings added in potting mixes exhibited great potentials to improve Pterocapus erinaceus seedlings in nursery. Panda et al, (2021) demonstrated that a vermicompost: sand: soil ratio of l:l:l resulted in the maximum sprouting (100%) and the lowest time span for sprouting completion on teak.…”

“…CR= Critically Endangered, B1ab (ii, ii, iv)+2ab(ii, iii, v); C2a(v);D Recommended Conservation actions: Due to the overexploitation of P. erinaceus in its distribution range, the Nigerian government and several NGOs, such as the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), have initiated programs across the country, especially in the distribution areas of this species, to train people on how to domesticate and raise seedlings of this species for regeneration in the wild. Unfortunately, this challenge was met by the stringent challenge of raising P. erinaceus seedlings from seeds due to the hard impermeable nature of the seed coats restricting the entry of both water and oxygen, which would aid in germination (Peter et al 2021). A lack of resources has widely been reported as one of the constraints of seedling raising (Danjuma et al 2014;Oko 2022).…”
