Assessment of Whole Body and Local Muscle Fatigue Using Electromyography and a Perceived Exertion Scale for Squat Lifting

Abstract: This research study aims at addressing the paradigm of whole body fatigue and local muscle fatigue detection for squat lifting. For this purpose, a comparison was made between perceived exertion with the heart rate and normalized mean power frequency (NMPF) of eight major muscles. The sample consisted of 25 healthy males (age: 30 ± 2.2 years). Borg’s CR-10 scale was used for perceived exertion for two segments of the body (lower and upper) and the whole body. The lower extremity of the body was observed to be … Show more

“…Electromyography (EMG) data have been shown to provide reliable information in assessing muscular activities for various tasks (Ahmad & Kim, 2018; Gazzoni, 2010; Luttmann et al, 2000; Vøllestad, 1997). It has also been shown to be an appropriate tool in assessing the risk of WMSDs where there are multiple risk exposures (Seidel et al, 2019).…”

“…EMG has been used to study muscle activities in many manual materials handling tasks (Ahmad & Kim, 2018; Shair et al, 2017). It, however, has not been used in measuring muscle activities while performing manual demolition tasks.…”

“…Manual material handling (MMH) of loads and carrying of loads is common in the workplace and even in everyday life (Ramadan, Khalaf, Ragab, & Abdelgawad, 2018). While objective measures, such as trunk load and muscle electromyography (EMG), have been analyzed to evaluate the risks of MMH, some studies utilized subjective methods such as rated perceived exertions and perceived weight of load to evaluate workload and fatigue (Ahmad & Kim, 2018). However, humans' perception of weight is not always accurate, which can influence people's decisions on lifting heavy objects and lead to potential risks (Amazeen, 2014).…”

“…For example, the forward head posture affected neck extensor muscle thickness (Goodarzi et al, 2018 ), and the spinal misalignment had bad influence on back muscle strength and shoulder range of motion (Imagama et al, 2014 ). Meanwhile, some other studies showed that poor posture had negative impact on the musculo-skeletal system, caused localized muscle fatigue, and may affect physical function and level of abilities (Ahmad and Kim, 2018 ).…”
