Assessment of wetlands to evaluate aquatic environment: a case study in Floodplain of Himalayan foothill region

Abstract: In floodplain wetland the evaluation of aquatic environment has been implemented as an effective tool for the rapid assessment. Ox-bow lakes i.e. natural wetlands are the abandoned part of the former meander are common features developed in floodplain. The northern portion of Coochbehar district is under the Tarai belt and the southern portion lies under the alluvial plain physiographic region. The Tarai zone is composed of alternate layers of clay and sand, with a high water table that creates many wetlands. … Show more

“…3). These natural wetlands which are locally known as beel or baor in Assam, West Bengal are ecologically very much productive [25]. These laterally migrating and sinuous rivers of the study area results in the aggradations in and around the channel due to the lower discharge and stream power for its downstream position.…”

“…Due to the lithololgy, geological structure, tectonic status, seasonal variation in river discharge and flow characteristics many floodplain wetlands have been evolved into this regime in the form of ox-bow lakes, meander scrolls 5 and palaeochannels 6 etc [21][22][23]. Floodplain wetlands providing enormous growth of fish food organisms are very much potential for capture fisheries as well as culture based fishery [24,25].…”

“…The urban population in West Bengal is distributed unequally across the state (Dasgupta, 1987). Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Koch Bihar districts in the Himalayan foothill region (Chamling & Bera, 2020; Ghosh & Ghosal, 2021; Kundu, 2020) have experienced a comparatively low level of urbanisation. In this region, the process of urbanisation has been noticed mainly in the district headquarters (Guin, 2016).…”
