Assessment of Water Quality Using Physico-chemical Parameters of Çamlıgöze Dam Lake in Sivas, Turkey

Abstract: The present study was carried out with the aim to assess of water quality using physico-chemical parameters of Çamlıgöze Dam Lake located at Central Anatolian region of Turkey. For this purpose, water samples were collected from surface and 10 m depth from two stations selected in Çamlıgöze Dam Lake. The physico-chemical parameters such as water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, conductivity, salinity, secchi disc depth, nitrate, nitrite, orto-phosphate, sulfate, chloride, total hardness, c… Show more

“…Conductivity range for the entire reservoir compares well with the ranges recorded for other tropical Lakes [21,42,51]. Also, there is marked high conductivity in Apete/Elewure and Agbaje/Babalegba and this could be attributed to high influx water which contains a lot of suspended and dissolved materials.…”

“…Alkalinity, pH and hardness affect the toxicity of many substances in the water. In the present study, the total alkalinity and hardness value recorded compared favourably with the trend obtained in Çamligoze Dam Lake [51] and Kangsabati reservoir [52] and was within the optimum value [32]. There is marked variation in observed spatial alkalinity and hardness, which could be attributed to high influx of floodwater which contains suspended and dissolved materials.…”

“…The concentrations observed in sediment samples varied from 0.247 -0.268 mg/Kg. The values of phosphates in this work is higher than those observed in water samples from Camligoze Dam Lake in Sivas Turkey [35], but slightly lower than the values of Edori and Nna, [11] in New Calabar River, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The orthophosphates are the most predominant species of phosphate in most aquatic environments.…”

“…The values obtained in the water samples were higher than the standard required for any domestic water use by WHO, whose limit is 250-500 mg/L. These values were higher than those of a previous researches in the water system [35,36], in different aquatic environments in Nigeria and elsewhere in the world. Elevated levels of sulphate in water beyond the standard requirement is associated with some physiological disorders or ailments such as lack of water in the human system and gastro-intestinal irritation [37].…”

“…Although there is considerable information on ecology and reproductive biology of P. obscura in most Nigerian lakes, little is however known about the relationship between various physicochemical parameters and gonad development in P. obscura [10,11].…”
