Assessment of Water Quality of Shatt Al-Basrah Canal using Water Pollution Index

Abstract: This study evaluates the water quality for the Canal of Shatt Al-Basrah, located in Basrah province, Iraq. The Shatt Al-Basrah Canal used to connect the waterway from Al-Hammar marshes in the north of Basrah province, to Khor Al-Zubair port in the south of the province. Nine physicochemical water quality parameters have been measured and analyzed for calculating the water pollution index (WPI) in the Canal. These parameters, which were used in developing the WPI, included: Potential of Hydrogen (pH), Nitrate (… Show more

“…The dissolution of phosphorus compounds in the Earth's crust is a result of rainfall and washing of agricultural lands (Rasan, 2001) in addition to the domestic wastewater that the canal containing phosphate compounds receives without treatment (Hassan et al, 2018). With respect to the low concentrations during November and March, it may be traced back to the consumption of orthophosphate by phytoplankton and aquatic plants to flourish in spring and fall.…”

“…The Shatt al-Basra Canal is an artificial drainage canal and is a waterway linking the southern marshes to the Arabian Gulf (Hassan et al, 2018). It is used to transport floodwater from the Hammar Marsh to Khor Al-Zubair and then to the Arabian Gulf via Khor Abdullah (UNEP, 2001).…”

“…In canal water, these parameters were recorded 7.76-9.04, 0.50-0.96, 1.26-3.05 and 0.23-3.74, respectively. As discussed above, the reasons were the same nutrients i.e., metals and different nutrients excess, but the source could be different i.e., agricultural run-off (Hassan et al 2018), natural rocks weathering and erosion (Zhang et al 2018), and atmospheric deposition also contributes signi cantly into heavy metals pollution and their supply to ground as well as surface water (Wright et al 2018). The soil properties i.e., pH, EC and SAR were also varied in canal and sewage irrigated soils.…”

“…Groundwater is an important source in the study area and is usually used for agriculture, while there is a problem in the same area related to the Shatt Al-Basrah canal because the water of this canal is polluted. Usually, the amounts of pollutants that flow into the canal from the factories, as well as the drainage of wastewater [1]. There is a need to better understand the interactions between groundwater and surface water (Shatt Al-Basrah Canal).…”
