Assessment of UV-permeability in nano-ZnO filled coatings via high throughput experimentation

Abstract: The degree of UV protection afforded by nano-ZnO in a polyurethane/acrylic clear topcoat was investigated. The influence of nano-ZnO concentration and dry film thickness on the optical properties (e.g., UV permeability and visible transmittance) of the coating was probed using a library of 28 samples that were prepared by high throughput techniques. A model for predicting the UV permeability of nanoZnO filled coatings was developed and the nano-ZnO loading condition required to block >99% UV radiation was dete… Show more

“…It is considered as an ideal UV blocker 48 Inorganic UV absorbers possess many advantages compared to organic absorber which includes higher thermal stability, nontoxicity, chemical stability and non-irritant nature. Similar to other nanoparticles, dispersion of znO nanoparticles in organic solvent and polymer matrices results in agglomeration of particles because of their high surface energy 49,50 . Laachachi and co-workers 51 have reported the increased thermal properties of PMMA by incorporation of znO and organo-montmorillonite.…”

“…e potential use of nanomaterials for products based on natural materials, such as wood, has been investigated. e properties of wood and wood-based materials can be modi ed by the aid of nanotechnology (Lowry et al 2008, Kaygin and Akgun 2009, Ashori and Nourbakhsh 2009, Lei et al 2008. For example, the water absorption of wood can be modi ed through reinforcing of surface coating materials with nanoparticles (Gholamiyan et al 2011).…”
