"Capsule": GIS can be used to identify soil contamination hot-spot areas and to assess potential pollutant sources in an urban community. AbstractThe study of regional variations and the anthropogenic contamination by metals of soils is very important for environmental planning and monitoring in urban areas. An extensive survey was conducted in the highly urbanized Kowloon area (46.9 km 2 ) of Hong Kong, using a systematic sampling strategy with a sampling density of 3 -5 composite soil samples (0 -15 cm) per km 2 . Geochemical maps of 'total' metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) from strong acid extraction in the surface soils were produced using Geographical Information System (GIS) methods. A significant spatial relationship was found for Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn in the soils using a GIS-based analysis, suggesting that these metal contaminants in the soils of the Kowloon area had common sources. Several hot-spot areas of metal contamination were identified from the composite metal geochemical map, mainly in the old industrial and * corresponding author (X. D. A further GIS analysis revealed that road junctions, major roads and industrial buildings were possible sources of heavy metals in the urban soils. This paper is aimed at investigating the nature of heavy metals dispersion in soil and surface water around the Arufu leadzinc mine, Middle Benue Trough, Nigeria. Rock samples from mine pits and adjoining outcrops as well as water samples from mine pits and adjacent streams were collected and analyzed. Also analysed were soil samples collected from mine waste and adjoining areas as well as from a forest to serve as control. All samples were analysed for Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Pb, Cr, As, Cd and Ag, using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Organic Matter (OM) content of the soil samples, and the pH of both soil and water samples were also determined. The results show that the OM content of soil was generally low (4 + 1.1%) and both soil and water samples were characterized by moderate pH values of 6.30 to 8.00 and 5.60 to 7.80 respectively. Furthermore, soils developed over bedrock show normal (background) levels of heavy metals, while soils developed over mine waste are enriched in Zn (181 + 83 mg/kg); Pb (40 + 28 mg/kg) and Cd (3 + 2 mg/kg). Also, water samples from mine ponds are enriched in Pb (0.02 -0.10 mg/1) and Cd (0.02 -0.04 mg/1). The sources of these heavy metals are most probably sulphides in the mine waste. Tailing and mine pits may therefore represent point sources of heavy metal contaminants and should therefore be reclaimed to prevent further contamination.

Ohaji Egbema is known for its oil production and exploration activities and so crops grown in this area could be contaminated. Chemical speciation was carried out on four commonly grown food crops in the area so as to determine the level of metal contamination. The samples were analyzed sequentially and the metal species in the extract determined by ASS. Results revealed that mean concentrations of all studied metals to fall within the WHO/FAO permissible limits. Significant bioavailability was observed for Pb in Okoro (0.67) and Orange (0.7). Zn showed the highest concentration and its bioavailability was highest for Okoro (12.6)>Pawpaw (7.9)>Orange (5.5)>Cassava (0.28). The sum of EDI for both adult and children exhibited similar trend with Cassava having the least value in both adult and children. Though metals showed low values of EDI, excessive consumption can have adverse effect in humans due to bioaccumulation in living system. Hazard Quotient (HQ) was highest for Pb (3.524) in Pawpaw for children while Fe (0.705) was highest in Pawpaw for adult. Generally, HQ was found to be highest in children for all the metals indicating great health risk for children. Risk associated with consuming these four fruit crops in terms of summation of RAC revealed the order of decrease to be: Okoro (1620)>Pawpaw (1021)>Orange (861)>Cassava (178). This study has shown that the consumption of these fruit crops could be a great health risk for children.
