Assessment of total body water and lean body mass from anthropometry, Watson formula, creatinine kinetics, and body electrical impedance compared with antipyrine kinetics in peritoneal dialysis patients

Abstract: A and BEI can be used to estimate TBW, but the considerable SD (or inaccuracy) makes individual predictions hazardous. Considering the correlation coefficients and difference between LBM by ADV and LBM according to different BEI equations, Deurenberg's formula can be advocated for use in the estimation of LBM by BEI.

“…Lean body mass estimated by CK underestimated LBM by 3 kg according to DEXA, which is in accordance with previous findings (12,13). Johansson et al (12) reported that when compared to total body potassium, LBM-CK significantly underestimated LBM by 2 -14 kg.…”

“…The creatinine clearance method is affected by dietary meat intake, physical activity, hormonal balance, diurnal variations of creatinine clearance, and catabolic states (11,12). Furthermore, LBM-CK is highly variable and underestimates LBM (12,13). On the other hand, LBM-A and LBM-BIA overestimate LBM, especially in obese patients or patients with fluid retention (13,14).…”

“…Because BIA equations must consider age, gender, race and body habitus of the patient (Dumler, 1997), accuracy of the results also depends on the equations used to determine body composition (de Fijter et al, 1997;Pichard et al, 1999).…”

“…The "gold standard" for LBM measurement is the tracer dilution method (15), which is laborious, invasive, and not suitable for routine patient care. Noninvasive and indirect methods such as creatinine kinetics, anthropometry, and bioelectrical impedance are therefore increasingly applied in PD.…”
