Assessment of three strategies practiced by fishery managers for restoring native brown trout (Salmo trutta) populations in Northern French Alpine Streams

Abstract: The efficiency of three strategies carried out by fisheries managers to restore native Mediterranean brown trout populations threatened by non-native Atlantic populations were assessed. The strategies tested were (i) genetic refuge area where stocking is banned, (ii) stocking with Mediterranean fry and (iii) translocation of wild Mediterranean spawners. Using two discriminatory microsatellite loci between Atlantic and Mediterranean alleles, we compared the genetic composition of samples before and after the ch… Show more

“…Fig. Three other studies performed on streams in the Rhô ne drainage area, and using genetic refuge policies for 5 and 13 years, gave similar results (Caudron et al, 2011a;Caudron & Champigneulle, 2011;C. stocked trout and trout from natural recruitment) and otolith-unstained angler's catches (i.e.…”

“…Particularly, S. coruhensis (Turan et al 2009) is endemic and only distributed in the waters of Eastern Black Sea Region. These populations are confronted with a medium-term risk of extinction (Caudron, Champigneulle, Guyomard, & Largiader, 2011;Dudgeon et al, 2006;Frank & Baret, 2013;Laikre, 1999). For these reasons, an efficient conservation strategy is needed in these populations in terms of protecting original species.…”
