Assessment of the Urban Expansion and Its Impact on the Eco-Environment—A Case Study of Hefei Municipal Area

Abstract: With the advancement of urbanization, the ecological environmental changes caused by the continuous expansion of cities have become a major concern. Thus, this study is based on a remote sensing image map of Hefei city from 1984 to 2020, which is now in the process of rapid development. We constructed an index system with ecological land, ecosystem service value, ecological environment quality, urban land expansion coefficient, urban heat island rate index, total pollutant emissions, ecological pressure, and e… Show more

Hefei's topog-raphy is open and varied, with an overall landscape of hilly plains; its humid subtropical monsoon climate and ability to facilitate east-west and north-south traffic are its main advantages [34]. The climate is mild with moderate rainfall, and the four distinct seasons consist of fluctuating springtime temperatures and copious summertime precipitation.…”

“…Urbanization is an important symbol of modernization and an inevitable process in the development of human societies [10,11]. The drastic transformation between land uses is one of the most distinctive features of urbanization, which is considered the major reason for the reduction of ESV [12][13][14]. Land uses integrate functions of production, ecology, and life, so China proposed the spatial classification system of "productionliving-ecological" space (PLES) based on this in 2012 [15].…”
