The investigations were carried out at the Experimental Station of Vytautas Magnus University Agriculture Academy, in 2021. The soil of the experimental site is silty light loam Planosol. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of multi-cropping intensity on the prevalence and damage of diseases and pests, as well as on weed abundance and biomass. The methods of crop diversification were studied: 1. Maize mono-crop (KU);2. Hemp mono-crop (KA);3. Faba bean mono-crop (PU);4. Maize and hemp binary-crop (KU + KA);5. Maize and faba bean binary-crop (KU + PU);6. Hemp and faba bean binary-crop (KA + PU);7. Maize, hemp and faba bean ternary-crop (KU + KA + PU). Contrary to expectations, the number of pests found in the hemp mono-crop (KA) and faba bean mono-crop (PU) was lower and the damage caused was lower than in the binary and ternary crops. Crop diversification has been an effective method of controlling faba bean diseases. The lowest abundance and intensity of Botrytis fabae and Ascochyta fabae were found in hemp and faba bean binary-crop (KA + PU). Binary maize and faba bean crop (KU + PU) were most effective in weed controlling, with the lowest number and biomass of weeds.

Ascochyta blight disease is a major problem in faba bean (Vicia faba L) production that causes 90% to 100% yield loss. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of three fungicides with three spray frequency levels against Ascochyta blight disease of faba bean varieties. For the assessment of disease management, a total of 21 treatments were used, which comprised three fungicides, three spray frequencies, two varieties, and control. The field experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with factorial combinations of variety, fungicide, and spray frequency levels in three replications. An analysis of variance was performed for disease, yield, and yield related and plant growth parameter data, using the Statistical Analysis System (SAS, 2003) version 9.1.3 software. The economic data obtained from the field experiment was analyzed using the partial budget analysis method. The results showed that area under disease progress curve, percent severity index, disease progress rate, and percent disease incidence had strong mean significant differences ( p < 0.01 ) between treated and untreated plots. Application of fungicide significantly increased plant height, stem girth, pod per plant, grain yield, and harvesting index ( p < 0.01 ) over untreated plots. Greater total return (195,938 Ethiopian birr ha−1), net return (101,761.3 Ethiopian birr ha−1), and net benefit (34,768.17 Ethiopian birr ha−1) were obtained by EH00102-4-1 variety, in two times Mancolaxyl treatment. The linear regression analysis result (R2) indicated that the variation in average grain yield of EH00102-4-1 and local susceptible varieties, due to the mean area under the disease progress curve, was 64.50% and 68.64%, respectively. Therefore, the use of EH00102-4-1 variety, with two times Mancolaxyl spray frequency application, at early growth stage and the onset of the disease is suggested as an agronomic management option, in Northwestern Ethiopia.

Background The genera of Bacilli are well-studied as a biocontrol agent of several plant disease pathogens under in vitro study. However the antagonistic potential of Bacillus spp. for the control of faba bean Aschochyta blight disease both in greenhouse and field studies have not yet been reported in Northwestern Ethiopia. Result The purpose of this study was to assess the natural prevalence of Bacillusisolates on faba bean leaves and identify the potential biocontrol species for the management of Ascochyta blight in Northwestern Ethiopia. The isolates of Bacillus were tested for their antagonistic potential against A.fabae isolates by using dual culture and bioassay techniques. Twenty seven distinct bacillus isolates predominantly occurred on faba bean leaves in Northwestern Ethiopia. B1H isolate is identified as Bacillus megaterium (MT122820.1:6-273) and B2H isolate is identified as Bacillus megaterium var. aryabhattai (KU161300.1:6-363). Bacillus megaterium spp. was constantly much more prevalent (62.96%) than Bacillus megaterium var. aryabhattai spp. (37.04%). Isolates that had moderate and high growth rate on dual growth media had the highest range of efficacy (40.2% to 48.7%) and the highest range (5mm-9mm) of mycelium lysis of A.fabae isolates in the detached leaf assay. Most of the bacillus isolates highly restricted the severity of A.blight on EH00102-4-1 variety and moderately contained on local susceptible check. Conclusion Thus Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus megaterium var.aryabhattai species showed promising antagonistic potential against A.blight severity under dual culture test and detached leaf assay. However further study should be conducted on their rhizospheric association and their plant growth-promoting properties under field condition in Northwester Ethiopia.
