Assessment of the safety and probiotic characteristics of Lactobacillus salivarius CGMCC20700 based on whole-genome sequencing and phenotypic analysis

Abstract: Lactic acid bacteria are generally regarded as alternatives to antibiotics in livestock and poultry farming, especially Lactobacillus strains, which are safe and have probiotic potential. Although Lactobacillus salivarius has long been proposed to be a probiotic, the understanding of the roles of this species is still in its infancy. Here, a strain of L. salivarius CGMCC20700 isolated from the intestinal mucosa of Yunnan black-bone chicken broilers was investigated in the context of its safety and probiotic ch… Show more

“…Interestingly, methionine sulfoxide reductase genes ( msrA and msrB ) that can repair oxidized methionine residues by ROS in proteins were detected [ 99 , 100 ]. Moreover, the genes ( dlt A–D) coding for immunomodulatory activities and some additional general stress genes were also identified [ 101 ]. These findings suggest that strains may withstand multiple stress conditions and are consistent with the adaptability characteristics of the gastrointestinal tract.…”

“…The six isolates harbored an effective oxidative stress response system ( Table 2 ) that supported survival and damage repair under aerobic conditions during production. The correlation between genetic determinants and phenotypic properties, such as hydrophobicity and adhesion to human intestinal cells, may be mediated by genes related to cell wall formation and biofilm formation ( luxS , ywqC , desR , and ccpA_2 ), potentially providing a competitive edge for the colonization of the gut environment [ 58 ]. The strong ability of a probiotic strain to attach to the gut enhances its persistence in the gut, prevents pathogens, and allows it to interact with the host to protect epithelial cells or modulate the immune system.…”

“…The genes associated with increased resistance to clindamycin, erythromycin, and tetracycline were ermC and tet(M). Similarly, L. salivarius CGMCC20700 was reported tetracycline ( tetM, tetL ) and macrolide ( ermC ) resistance-related genes 28 . Tetracycline and erythromycin are commonly used for livestock treatment.…”
