Assessment of the reliability of high-intensity quadriceps femoris muscle fatigue

Abstract: The findings of this study suggest that the quantification of muscle fatigue during high-intensity, short-term exercise is more reliably described by the slope, which is related to the magnitude of force output.

“…In the clinical practice of physical therapy, muscle fatigue must be assessed during the application of the NMES protocols to adapt the current parameters to the stimulated muscles and minimize the harmful effects caused by the onset of muscle fatigue (pain, fibrillation, and torque reduction) 7 , thus optimizing the benefits of the technique. Lactate analysis, electromyography (EMG) and mechanomyography (MMG) have already been described in the literature as techniques to assess the variations that occur in the muscle before and during the onset of fatigue 3,8,9 .…”

“…Subsequently, work output and decline in moment were utilized to evaluate muscle endurance during repetitive dynamic contractions [15]. In the present study, a work fatigue index (WF) was chosen to reveal the decreasing trend of the peak moment across the 25 repetitions and to evaluate the anti-fatigue ability of muscle during long-duration tasks.…”

“…Inadequate rest between test trials may have a significant impact on the reliability of measurements due to fatigue, which may compromise the reported findings (Parcell et al, 2002;Pincivero, Gear & Sterner, 2001). If rest periods are insufficient, then the specific use of the ATP-PC system and concurrent maximal muscular strength will be lost in addition to fatigue becoming a confounding variable (Weiss, 1991).…”
