“…6 The simple correlation coefficient between the heel BMD measured Osteoporosis in young adults using QUS and the MCW was 0.394 (P , 0.001) in 262 Japanese men aged 80 years. 10 This result is similar to that of our current study. In contrast, a moderate correlation (r 5 0.471, P , 0.001) was found in 397 Japanese women aged 80 years.…”

“…Measurement of the mandibular cortical width has been shown to be a poor predictor of fractures in an elderly study group, but this statistically nonsignificant result may be due to the small numbers of patients who developed fractures in some studies [22]. In our previous work, greater sensitivity in osteoporosis detection was introduced by using mandibular cortical width in combination with other clinical risk factors [1], but no other clinical risk factors were available for our sample in the present study.…”

“…A study by Okabe et al [9] examined the relationship between MCW in men and women and heel BMD. While the authors found that the correlation between MCW and BMD was higher in women than in men, the correlation of 0.394 found in that study was still higher than the current study (r=0.12).…”

“…Sensitivity, specificity, the positive and negative predictive values, and the positive and negative likelihood ratios were calculated for each diagnostic threshold along with the 95% confidence intervals for each. Comparison of Spearman's correlation coefficients with different elapsed time frames between the DXA scan and the panoramic radiograph (12,9,6, and 3 months) revealed that the best correlation was achieved at 6 months with no gain by restricting the elapsed time to 3 months due to the loss of subjects (data not shown). ROC and sensitivity/specificity analyses were limited to subjects who had a DXA scan within 6 months of the panoramic radiograph.…”
