Assessment of the Quality of Web-based Information on Bunions

Abstract: Patients are commonly using the internet as an information resource, in spite of the highly variable quality of this information. They should be encouraged to exercise caution and to utilize only well-known sites.

“…This is the first study to evaluate the availability, quality, and accuracy of hallux valgus–specific resources as a function of Internet search terms. In a work by Chong et al, 23 the quality of 42 websites was assessed based on a search for “bunions.” The authors found the websites to vary in quality, recommending that readers of the websites process the information with great caution. Unlike our study, the role of different search terms was not investigated, nor was the accuracy of the material presented.…”
