Assessment of the posterior segment of the cat eye by optical coherence tomography (OCT)

Abstract: Retinal thickness was measurable with high precision; values compare well to older histologic studies. OCT bears significant advantages over histology in enabling one to repeat measurements in living animals and thus allowing longitudinal studies. Various vitreoretinal pathologies common in feline eyes are detectable and quantifiable by OCT.

“…First, the rabbit is certainly not the ideal animal in terms of retinal anatomy since its retina is parvangiotic, which makes it prone to more severe retinal degeneration than animals (such as humans) with holoangiotic retinas, where at least the inner retina is nourished by proprietary retinal vessels and should remain intact even in the presence of a subretinal implant (e.g., Gekeler et al 31,32 ). Second, the number of animals in our study was very small, and each animal was treated differently, which does inhibit statistical analysis.…”

“…Assim, a OCT tem sido aplicada com êxito para detectar alterações estruturais na retina em humanos, tais como mensuração da camada de fibras nervosas para monitorização em pacientes com glaucoma e mensuração da camada de fotorreceptores na retinose pigmentária (Gekeler et al 2007); esta caracterizada por alteração genética que afeta a camada de fotorreceptores e o EPR. O diagnós-tico é baseado nos achados fundoscópicos e na avaliação do ERG (Witkin et al 2006).…”

“…The area centralis showed the least thickness, as expected. Intermediate values are found in the peripheral retina [93] .…”

“…Studies of the histogenesis of the retina of the cat indicate that the process of retinal maturation is centered on the area centralis, which thus seems to be an organizing focus in the ontogeny as well as the adult function of the visual system [92] . In 2007, Gekeler et al [93] assessed the feasibility of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for examining the cat ocular fundus, to provide normative data on retinal thickness in different fundus regions. As was to be expected, retinal thickness varies across different regions of the cat's posterior pole.…”
