Assessment of the Petrochemical Industry Pollution on the Skikda Bay, Algeria

Abstract: Abstract:The Skikda bay is located in the northern part of Algeria. The area is in contact with a petrochemical industrial complex, which raw materials and final products contaminate the surrounding areas via atmospheric pollution as well as effluents, which are dumped into seawaters. To establish the effects of these pollutants and waste disposal on the vicinity of the bay, several samples were taken at different distances along the bay and the outfall pipes of the industrial complex. Subsequently, several ch… Show more

“…Evidence about the industry appears to support these complaints and concerns. Indeed, research suggests that petrochemical activity pollutes air with volatile organic compounds, and water, soil, and flora near refineries are found to show increased levels of heavy metals (Beg et al, 2001;Bosco, Varrica, & Dongarra, 2005;Conley, Thomas, & Wilson, 2005;Nafissa, Bouzerna, & Chettibi, 2005). Moreover, physical health problems, such as leukemia, preterm births, and lower birth weight of newborns, are associated with proximity to petrochemical plants (Yang et al, 2004;Yang, Tseng, Chang, 2003;Yu et al, 2006).…”

“…Atmospheric pollution is a major environmental issue that has critical impacts on society, the economy, and human health [1][2][3]. It is also regarded as one of the most significant environmental concerns of both the public and scientists for past few decades [4], related studies evaluating or monitoring its status, risk, and quality have been conducted worldwide [5][6][7][8][9]. Especially in urban areas, various atmospheric pollutants are generated in increasing amounts due to various types of land use and human activity.…”
