Assessment of the mineral ilmenite for U–Pb dating by LA-ICP-MS

Abstract: The chemical composition of the mineral ilmenite is useful in mineral exploration for diamonds and in understanding igneous geological processes. This study develops an analytical methodology for accurate analyses of...

“…Both the above methods belong to the non-matrix matched calibrations, which have increasingly successful applications in other different minerals, e.g. , zircon, 17 allanite, 18 monazite, 17 xenotime, 17 cassiterite, 19,20 garnet, 21,22 vesuvianite, 23 wolframite, 24,25 hematite, 26–28 ilmenite, 29 and scheelite. 30 However, due to the different ablation behavior between the different types of minerals, some special analytical conditions were applied to reduce the matrix effects, e.g.…”

“…[10][11][12][13] Ilmenite incorporates elements that are considered both compatible (Cr, V, and Ni) and incompatible (Mn, Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf) in silicate minerals. 14,15 Previous studies have used the elemental chemistry of ilmenite to interpret the thermal and physical conditions of magmas, [16][17][18] mantle sources, 5,19,20 and crystal fractionation processes. 14,21 Moreover, ilmenite has been used as an effective tool for diamond exploration 5,22,23 and geospeedometry for estimating the timing of volcanic activity.…”

“…A fundamental requirement for the application of U-series dating is the fractionation of U and Th in the crystallising mineral phase (Schmitt 2011). Ilmenite fulfils this requirement in some cases, by preferentially incorporating U over Th, depending on the U valence state, allowing for the application of 230 Th-238 U disequilibrium dating (La Tourrette et al 1991, Thompson et al 2021. This, however, is not the case for apatite (Prowatke and Klemme 2006), which fails to produce accurate isochron age constraints, due to an insufficient spread of the ( 238 U)/ ( 232 Th) ratio.…”
