Assessment of the measurement of canine and feline serum fibroblast growth factor-23 concentrations by automated chemiluminescence immunoassay

Abstract: This study compared canine and feline fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-23 concentration measurements between automated chemiluminescence assay (CLEIA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Seventy serum samples each from dogs and cats were evaluated. FGF-23 measurements by CLEIA significantly correlated with those of ELISA in both dogs and cats. The Bland-Altman test showed that FGF-23 between CLEIA and ELISA had fixed and proportional biases, respectively, in both dogs and cats. Measurements by CLEIA we… Show more

“…As the stability of FGF-23 in feline serum samples stored at −20 • C was demonstrated for a storage period of up to 28 days [36] and 14 days [29], the FGF-23 concentrations in our study were likely not affected by storage at −20 • C for a maximum of 5 working days. Although the laboratory recommends taking blood samples in cats that have fasted overnight, it was not possible to collect information regarding the diet and fasting status of the cats included due to the retrospective study design.…”

“…Several studies investigating FGF-23 concentration in cats have been performed so far. Different diagnostic quantitative enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits have been used for this purpose: Four of these studies used the FGF-23 ELISA kit (Kainos Laboratories, Tokyo, Japan) [29,31,33,34]; two further studies used MyBioSource ELISA (MyBioSource, San Diego, CA, USA) [30,35]; and in another one, MedFrontier FGF23 ELISA (Minaris Medical Co., Tokyo, Japan) [36] was used. As knowledge regarding the performance of different diagnostic assays for FGF-23 concentration measurements in cats remains limited, the aim of this study was to compare three diagnostic assays for the measurement of FGF-23 concentration and to evaluate the correlation of this parameter with other parameters involved in renal dysfunction in cats.…”

“…The CL-Jack assay uses the same antibodies as the MedFrontier assay but has been shown to yield relatively lower concentrations compared with the MedFrontier ELISA at higher FGF-23 concentrations. 42 The IDEXX test suggests measuring an FGF-23 concentration in cats with a diagnosis of stage 1 or 2 CKD to help veterinarians decide which cats may benefit from phosphate reduction therapy. The RI for the assay is <300 pg/ml.…”

“…Regarding the use of available FGF-23 assays in cats, several studies have been performed. The following diagnostic quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits have been tested: the FGF-23 ELISA kit (Kainos Laboratories, Tokyo, Japan) by four studies [ 15 , 17 , 19 , 20 ], the MyBioSource ELISA (MyBioSource, San Diego, CA, USA) by two studies [ 16 , 21 ], and the MedFrontier FGF23 ELISA (Minaris Medical Co., Tokyo, Japan) by another study [ 22 ]. In a study from 2023 performed by the same authors, where the FGF-23 ELISA kit, the MyBioSource ELISA, and the LIAISON FGF 23 kit for intact FGF-23 were all compared on the Liaison platform developed by DiaSorin (Saluggia, Italy), the FGF-23 ELISA kit (Kainos Laboratories, Tokyo, Japan) demonstrated the best correlation with various creatinine concentrations according to the IRIS [ 23 ].…”
