Assessment of the Magdalena River delta socio-ecological system through the Circles of Coastal Sustainability framework

Abstract: River-mouth systems and deltas are hotspots where many of the coastal syndromes can be found. Moreover, these systems provide essential ecosystem services (e.g., recreation, food provisioning, protection against natural hazards). The present study focuses on the socio-ecological system at the delta of the Magdalena River in the central Caribbean Region in Colombia. This research seeks to assess the multidimensional sustainability of the Magdalena river-mouth system (MRm-SES) to improve the knowledge basis for … Show more

“…The framework is divided into four domains (environment, social, economy, and governance), each with five categories related to any coastal environment. The categories were developed by the multi-disciplinary Scientific Committee of Future Earth Coasts 1 in 2016 and have been applied to the Spanish coast (De Alencar et al, 2020) and Magdalena River delta in Colombia (Gallo-Vélez et al, 2023).…”

“…However, most of them focus on only one sustainability domain (environmental, social, or economic) or evaluate the causes and responses to a particular issue, such as eutrophication. The framework chosen in this assessment is based on the Circles of Coastal Sustainability (De Alencar et al, 2020), further developed by Gallo-Vélez et al (2023). This framework is designed to assess environmental, social, economical, and governance domains to understand the complex interactions of the region's development.…”
