Assessment of the Lubricity of Grease‐Sealing Rotary Shaft Seals Based on Grease Properties

Abstract: Grease‐lubricated sealing systems have an increased risk of starved lubrication. For this work, the lubricity of 23 greases in a rotary shaft sealing system was evaluated with a new test and evaluation method. The lubricity was then correlated with rheological and other grease properties. These grease properties are either available by the data sheet or can be measured with low effort. The results of the correlation allow a preselection of greases which are expected to lubricate rotary shaft seals well. This c… Show more

“…For the PUthickener group the correlation decreases to 𝑅𝑅 2 = 0.339. This decrease of the coefficient of determination can also be seen for other grease properties, as is shown in [8,9]. All correlations are shown in Figure 9.…”

“…In the research project "Grease deficiency", the lubricity of 23 commercially available greases was tested [7]. Many properties of the 23 greases were analysed and correlated with each other [8,9]. The results show no direct correlation between a single grease property and the lubricity of the grease.…”

“…In summary, selecting the appropriate grease based on the specific working conditions can effectively extend the service life of bearings and increase the overall revenue of the equipment [120]. When selecting grease types, it is important to consider not only the operating temperature, speed, and other mentioned factors, but also the bearing application of the working mechanism and application occasions.…”
